225Välkommen till Sverige - Migration & asylum in Sweden a Nordic Horizons event with Mikael Ribbenvik, Acting Director of the Swedish Migration Agency

With Mikael Ribbenvik, Acting Director of the Swedish Migration Agency. In 2015 more than 163,000 asylum seekers arrived in Sweden, more per capita than in any other European country, including Germany. The sharp increase in the number of people fleeing Syria and other war-torn countries was labeled a 'migrant crisis' in Europe. How did Sweden deal with the issue? What lessons can be learned? Even before the recent Syrian crisis Sweden was already one of Europe’s most welcoming countries to refugees. But the country has found it dificult to integrate newcomers and find jobs for refugees and asylum seekers with little grasp of the Swedish language. Mikael Ribbenvik, Acting Director of the Swedish Migration Agency, explains why Sweden has become the Nordic nation with the most open attitude to migrants and refugees and shares his experience in managing the recent surge in migration applications.

7.00pm Mon 21 Nov 2016
Act As If We Own The Place campaign launch.

643Our Democracy Act As If We Own The Place campaign launch.

Our Democracy - Act As If We Own The Place is a coalition of organisations, campaigners and politicians who are dedicated to improving our local democracy. The campaign arises from a simple idea: that human beings flourish when they have control over their own lives. We think communities can redesign their local democracy to work better for them, thriving all the more by taking control of their community’s future. To celebrate the launch of the camapign, join us for a public discussion on renewing local democracy featuring: LESLEY RIDDOCH, author of Blossom: What Scotland needs to flourish ROBIN MCALPINE, director of think-tank Common Weal GEHAN MACLEOD, co-founder of GalGael Trust and former resident of Pollok Free State WILLIE SULLIVAN, director of the Electoral Reform Society Scotland At the moment most of us have things done to us; power exercised over us by the government, by the council, or by companies who don’t work with our community interests at their core. This disempowers and patronises us. If democracy is about anything it is about us running our own affairs. That is why we are asking you to ‘act as if you own the place’ - if the citizens of a village, town, city or country don’t own it, then who does? At the launch we will announce a series of Scotland-wide events where local people can gather together to talk about how they want to run that local place. More information about this will be available shortly. There has never been a more exciting time to get involved in the campaign for a better local democracy. Moreover, there has never been a time when it has been more needed. Our democracy isn’t working in the way it should. To renew and extend the control we have in our communities, it needs a shot in the arm from you and your friends and networks. The event is free but so we have an idea of numbers, please reserve tickets using the ticketing link. Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/283940438668537/

The former journalist and now media commentator has been frank in hos ascertions about Scottish politics, the Labour party and the best path for Scotland. If we are to win #indyref2 we must engage with the NO voters who are curious and swithering. A point of difference this time around will be to hear from those who have changed opinion since 2014. Safety at the Clydeside We will be chatting with Margaret and Duncan Spiers and Councillor Graham Campbell regarding saftey on the Clydeside.

We will be chatting with Margaret and Duncan Spiers an Councillor Graham Campbell regarding their petition, details below. " FAO: Members of the Public Petitions Committee, Scottish Parliament Re: Petition to Implement Safety at the Clydeside In January 2016 our son Christopher drowned in the River Clyde off the Broomielaw in Glasgow. Our petition is in recognition of the higher proportion of deaths by drowning at the Clyde, We will never bring our son back but we hope what we are calling for will save someone else’s life, and Christopher’s death will not have been in vain. Christopher was on his way home from a night out in Glasgow and the Tradeston Bridge which he wanted to cross from North to South to get home was cordoned off due to a storm and part of an unsafe building had came down in this area. Christopher was stopped from crossing by police officers who were on the opposite side of the cordon in the unsafe area. The police let 2 pedestrians cross from South to North, and Christopher spoke to them and then he decided to climb the fence at the water’s edge. Unfortunately he fell in and although the police tried to rescue him, it was too late and he died. We simply want to know if there is something the Scottish Government can do. We believe warning signs will make people like our son think twice before taking risks. We would like the signs to be put up at each rescue ladder from the Glasgow Green to The science centre where the higher proportion of people lose their lives. We would like the Safety Belts along the river’s edge to have ropes attached, as the current ones don’t have a ropes and can drift away from the person. The person throwing could keep trying and if the person manages to grab it they can be pulled to safety. Time is of the essence, and throwing the safety belt is the upmost important thing to do straight away in trying to save a life. We realise the committee cannot bring back our son Christopher but we hope you will use whatever power or influence you have to help us to make the river safer for the general public. Thank you for taking the time to listen to a heartbroken mum and dad. We realise the committee cannot bring back our son Christopher but we hope you will use whatever power or influence you have to help us to make the river safer for the general public. Summits for freedom - Edinburgh On Saturday 13th at 9:30AM we will met to climb Arthur Seat in Solidarity with Catalan project Cims per la llibertat, to support Catalan political prisoners

CIMS PER LA LLIBERTAT aims to raise awareness of the injustice that represents the situation of Catalan prisoners, political exiles and reprisals, as well as convey our unconditional support to both them and their families. CIMS PER LA LLIBERTAT is a sporting, solidarity and protest action. It consists of a simultaneous ascent to 18 summits in Catalonia that have been chosen directly by our prisoners, exiled and reprisal politicians. The purpose is to make them reach our support, offer our efforts and make our shouts of freedom from the highest points of our country. From the points that they have chosen, we will make it very visible that the situation we are experiencing is not normal and we will demand democracy, dialogue and justice. Please bring your own snack and water. Be ready for a windy place so dress appropriate clothes. We recommend to print some materials from website: https://www.cimsxlallibertat.cat/ This is an easy walk for everybody who wants to join us, from childs to adults. Came along! #presospolitics

Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. (2016 Scottish parliament, 2017 Scottish council, 2019 English council and 2020 General election.) Join us on the Square with the message, #Indyref2 2018.

HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". Let’s seize the day in 2015. NOTE: Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver will be one of the speakers :) FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/401561463337441/

ALSO here for protesters live stream within the danger zone http://livestre.am/5dlJI Highly contentious issue with many locals against the blowing up of these 6 flats at once and want them brought down floor by floor. BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.
