991 Interview with one of the Orkney petitioners Tim Morrison speaks at length about the Carmichael case

We speak with Tim Morrison, one of the four constituents of Alistair Carmichael, who brought the petition against him under section 106 of the Representation of the People Act. On Wednesday 9 December 2015 the Election Court judges ruled that there was reasonable doubt that the false statement made by Mr Carmichael concerned his personal reputation, one of the three issues that had to be proven. The other two, that self-talking was relevant to this section of the Act and the purpose of Carmichael's false statement was to improve his chances of re-election were judged in favour of the petitioners.

Discussion introduced by Fatima Uygun on the inspirational 1915 Glasgow Rent Strike where women played a leading role in fighting exploiting landlords and forced the Government to introduce rent controls. The First World War saw a number of rent strikes break out across Britain. But the 1915 Glasgow rent strike stands out, in no small part due to the context of Clydeside at that time.

FishingROV a project to develop a new sustainable fishing method.

117 Mr Fishing Rov FishingROV a project to develop a new sustainable fishing method.

FishingROV a project to develop a new sustainable fishing method. Selectively fishing for the target species, eliminating by-catch while minimizing damage to the seabed. It’s capable of individually catching scallops from the sea bed; reducing our dependence on scallop dredging and avoiding the damage to the sea bed associated with dredging. Catches other food species without any by-catch, dredge or trawl damage. Brings moreawareness to the sea floor and kindles an appreciation for a place few people visit. Provides a sustainable and distributed employment for local costal workers. I also hope it will be useful in controlling the Lion Fish population explosion currently unbalancing the ecosystems of Bermuda and the east coast of America. It could also potentially fish in waters too deep to be easily accessed by divers 100m+. I love the idea that anyone could build a FishingROV and try to develop the design to make self build easier. The idea is to use off the shelf components as much as possible and think of where 3D printing and other low cost CAM could be employed to maintain affordability. The project will be Open Source, with all plans, code, ideas and research available for free. Also I would like to invite feedback/ideas from anyone with an interest, to speed the development and track implemented ideas.

a Nordic Horizons event comparing land use in Scotland and Norway

livestream by Democracy TV

1637 Nurturing Nature a Nordic Horizons event comparing land use in Scotland and Norway

South West Norway and Highland Scotland are closely similar in climate, geology and landforms; but very different in land cover, human population and land use. SW Norway is rapidly reforesting but Scotland is not. Rural areas are more heavily populated. Is that because southwest Norway is so very different in the basic conditions of life – or because land use history differs profoundly on either side of the North Sea? Duncan Halley (a Scot who has lived and worked in Norway for 20 years) describes how moorland in Norway has transformed to farmland and woodland and makes comparisons with land in the Scottish Highlands. His observations are timely. The Land Reform Bill is continuing its progress through the Scottish Parliament amidst assertions that much of the land in the Scottish Highlands and Borders is fit only for use by sporting estates. Could the appearance and productivity of Scottish land more closely resemble its Nordic cousin if land use here was changed? Book free seats on Eventbrite - tickets are free but limited in number - so please book early. There will be a short TED style video of Duncan’s presentation available afterwards. General info and updates on speakers will be posted on our Facebook page and website www.nordichorizons.org. Please keep checking there rather than sending individual emails – NH is a small, self-administering, volunteer-based group with a rather ambitious list of new meetings to arrange.

The Glasgow Effect A talk by Ellie Harrison followed by Q&A. The event is free and open to all.

Glasgow-based artist Ellie Harrison sparked a fast-and-furious debate about class, capitalism, art, education and much more, when details of her year-long project The Glasgow Effect went viral in January. Twelve months later, having slashed her own carbon footprint for transport to zero, she will talk about the sustainability of this 'sustainable lifestyle', the relationship between art and activism and the various local projects and campaigns she has been investing her time and energy in to help make Glasgow a more equal, connected and sustainable city. Followed by a Q&A chaired by Peter McCaughey. The event is free and open to all. It will take place at an accessible venue in Glasgow, which will be confirmed once we assess demand. Basic Income: real social security in advance of Fife's pilot citizen's basic income, an opportunity to explore the concept with speakers including Prof Karl Widerquist

Most of us have concerns about the current social security system. It doesn't make anyone feel secure. It is often seen as a form of control and a massive source of anxiety. In addition the world of work is changing and our system of social security seems stuck in the past. Maybe its time to test out something new? As Fife is leading the UK in exploring the opportunity to 'pilot' a Citizen's Basic Income Scheme (That is every citizen is given a set amount of money every month. This replaces much of social security and money is taken back from the wealthier through tax to also make it redistributive and will help to tackle poverty and inequality). We are delighted to have Professor Karl Widerquist as our keynote speaker. Professor Widerquest is one of the worlds leading advocates for basic income and co-chair of Basic Income Earth Network, a network of Basic Income organisations across the globe. 10.30 Welcome and Registration, Tea and Coffee . 10.45 Bring to Order Explanation of Day - Willie Sullivan Chair of CBINS Morning Session - Finding out about UBI (chaired by Willie Sullivan ) 10.50 Introduction to CBINS - Maddie Halliday – Trustee of CBINS ( 5mins) 10.55 Basic Income What and Why? - Professor Karl Widerquist (30 mins) 11.25 Why Fife? - Paul Vaughn , Head of Community and Corporate Development , Fife Council (10 mins) 11.35 Group Discussion Around Tables – Strengths and Weaknesses of BI (20 mins) 11.55 Questions to the Panel (35 mins) 12.30 Break for Lunch - Soup and Sandwich Afternoon Session - Getting to a Pilot (Chaired by Annie Miller) 13.00 Why a pilot ? - Speaker TBC (10mins) 13.10 The Pros and Cons of Pilots – Professor Karl Widerquist (10 mins) 13.20 Quick Q & A then speakers can circulate around the tables (10min) 13.40 Group Discussion around tables (20 mins) What are the Problems of a Fife Pilot? What is the most tricky problem? What should be done to address problem? Who should be responsible? 14.00 Panel takes main points back from tables discussion (10 mins ) 14.10 Response from the panel (25 mins) Alex Rowley MSP, Deputy Leader of Scottish Labour Party Dave Dempsey, Conservative Group Leader Fife Council Cllr Lesley Laird, Deputy Leader Fife Council (Labour) Ronny Cowan, MP for Inverclyde (SNP) 14.30 Additional Q & A from Audience (15 mins) 14.45 Thanks and Close Willie Sullivan (10 mins) Two questions for Audience 1) How Important is Citizens Income to making Scotland a better place to live for everyone? 2) How much of a priority do you think should be given to Fife piloting a scheme? 15.00 End With lots of opportunity to discuss and ask questions about the transformative idea of a Basic Income for everyone this event will lay out the work to date to create a Basic Income pilot here in Scotland and provide a template for others to follow across the nation.

Scottish Independence Convention Presents The Reassembly Elaine C Smith will be hosting the many guests from across the country and the movement... and we will then be able to get down to some serious discussion about the way ahead...

Exactly two years on from the referendum, The Scottish Independence Convention are having a social event for all interested Indy groups to launch the next phase... to bring us all together, encourage dialogue, listen to some speeches, poetry, comedy and enjoy some music. We need all that energy, artistic endeavour, hard work and good old political discussion to get started again ( though it has never really gone away) and we need to establish a gathering place for all the groups, individuals, artists and ideas that made the Yes movement so vital in the journey towards self determination and Independence. Elaine C Smith will be hosting the many guests from across the country and the movement... and we will then be able to get down to some serious discussion about the way ahead.

The YES Movement A non party afiliated rally for Scottish Independence

The Yes Movement Rally on the 18th of September 2016, this is being held at Glasgow Green from 12pm until 8pm. This is going to be a day to remember. Why come? Why Volunteer? I would like to tell thee. Have any of you ever felt like you were here, to do something great with your life? Well you are and this is why we are all here. We are here to change the world. It is no easy task, but to us it is clear that the task is ours. That is why they called us the Bravest in all the stories. We will show the world there is another way to live, that social and cultural change is inevitable and that a new way of doing things is being birthed. A great human being once said 'Be the change you wish to see in the world'. For too long we have been realising that the entire system is corrupt. We have waited for those in power to change things, For someone to stand up and do what's right. None of them have, not really. We are creating this Movement together. As Humanity we can free ourselves from this system that none of us agreed to when we were born here, by taking our power back and in doing that, we show others how to free themselves from the Elitist system. To put it bluntly, the days of working to pay bills and die are over. We want more for ourselves and the generations to come. We stand for Equality, Contributing and Pioneering our own future. There are new way's to do things now and we all know that, we must venture into the unknown and discover 'HOW?' together. Please email [email protected] Your expertise as a wonderful human being is required if you are a First Aider, Stage Hand, Steward, Chaperone or you would like to set up a stall for the day. Please also feel free to contact us if you have any suggestions/ ideas, or if you would like to help us in anyway. All contributions are most welcomed. The system we live under is broken, we're not fixing it. We want to create a new one. Go bravely friends. We are the change bringers. Please Share this message, We look forward to hearing from you.

Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. (2016 Scottish parliament, 2017 Scottish council, 2019 English council and 2020 General election.) Join us on the Square with the message, #Indyref2 2018.

HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". Let’s seize the day in 2015. NOTE: Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver will be one of the speakers :) FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/401561463337441/

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.
